A New Field

Back in February I started a new job at Pivotal as a Senior Field Engineer where I will be specializing in pre-sales support for Pivotal Cloud Foundry.  I'm very excited about this career change and know that my previous experiences as a lead developer, technical architect, and open source software zealot will serve me well in this new role.

Pivotal

When I was first contacted by Pivotal, I only knew about them via their association with SpringSource.  As a die-hard Spring Framework user and soapboxer, that tie-in was enough to peak my interest.  I started to look more into the company and was impressed by Pivotal's story and the amazing talent driving the organization.  As a spin-out and joint venture of EMC and VMware (and a nice fat $105 million investment from GE), Pivotal has the soul of a startup with the backing of giants.  With inspiring (Paul Mauritz) and thought provoking leaders (James Watters, Andrew Schafer) at the helm, this is a truly exciting company to work for!

Field Engineering

So, what does it mean to be a Senior Field Engineer at Pivotal?  With respects to my specialization, it means being an expert in Pivotal Cloud Foundry: installation, configuration, management, deployment, integrations, etc.  That is quite a lot to take in for a new employee but thankfully the training I am receiving is remarkable.  I've never worked for a company that put so much effort into properly training an employee, so this experience is truly amazing.

Upcoming

I'm in the process of completing my training and starting to transition to actual field work.  I'm becoming more involved within the cloud community and will be presenting on The Twelve-Factor App (read cloud-ready apps) at the Dallas Cloud Foundry Meetup on Tuesday May 5th.  I'll also be blogging more about Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Platform-as-a-Service in general.

Happy Clouding,
- Patrick.
